Dream: Muffins or Music

The first thing I recall is being somewhere like a job that took place somewhere in the mornings. I guess it was like a bakery.  Then apparently I began taking some music classes in the morning around the same time. As I was sitting in this music class, everyone was tuning up their instruments, getting ready to play.  I was sitting in the middle aisle of the room, next to professional disc-golfer Simon Lizotte.  I believe the teacher was a white-haired older gentleman, who sat at a desk off to the left side, and for some reason I also thought he had something to do with the bakery job as well.  I observed Simon playing a single stringed instrument, which he played with a pattern and varying emphasis in a way that made it sound interesting.

Then I went and grabbed a guitar from somewhere, and there was a sequence where I was given some kind of chord progression, A – Am – J — and I believe the band was getting ready to play “Jingle Bells”. So I tried to remember the fret patterns for A and Am, which I eventually was able to do, but I first spoke with someone else in the class, like OK this string, this fret, etc, got it sorted. So, then the J chord? That one was obviously confusing because I’d never come across it before.  My depth of music knowledge was limited, but it was obvious to me that it was off the scale, so when I asked about it, I was shown some gray/blackened background with lines across it and lettering, as it was a somewhat complex diagram, so I observed that and discovered a new string, but it was incredibly loose so it had to be tightened first before it could even make a sound.  I had to use my judgement about the proper tension on that string since there wasn’t any reference material for its note in relation to the other strings; it was just at the bottom.

After getting comfortable on the frets again, suddenly my boss from the bakery job came in and basically was asking me What’s the deal, since I was skipping out on that job to be in this class.  So I realized I couldn’t simultaneously make a commitment to the baking job in the morning then ignore it to do something else, and I told the boss that I enjoyed doing all three things, which I believe were trading/coding/metaphysics.  I suggested a solution about doing the bakery job in the evening, but I wasn’t sure if a slot was available on the schedule.  He seemed receptive; he just wanted clarity about my intentions, but I don’t know if anything was decided in that moment.

Then we were off over in another area, and some people sort of just started skipping by, one of whom I presume was my friend Caramel. Some kid suddenly said ‘Oh, I see why the boss wants to hire her.’ I just saw the angle he implied about the boss wanting to hire her because she was cute and he thought he might have a chance of getting with her if they worked together.  I just said something about how she and I had gone to school together, just suggesting she and I were sort of close, had a bit of history. Then I watched her and the people who skipped past as they did a choreographed dance routine and I just noticed how ‘Caramel’ wasn’t actually the girl I knew; it was just a girl with similar complexion. I could see differences in the facial structure, eye socket shape, cheek bones, etc, and she just seemed kind of average, not impressive. The whole thing seemed uneventful.
